Space Inquiry

In space we see...

Space vocabulary

Looking through different books about space. Drawing and discussing different planets.

The beginning of our space station.

Graphing and comparing our favourite planets.

Ordering the planets.

Our challenge: to make rockets using different pattern blocks and cubes.

Learning about planets and space vocabulary.

Our space station and fantastic astronauts!

Using paint and spray bottles to make stars for our space station.

We created a space-themed sensory bin. It is filled with blue sand, pebbles and space figures.

Making galaxy playdough as a class. We took turns measuring and mixing. Click here to see our recipe.

Our creations!

Our rocket.

Trying and graphing our favourite space ice cream flavor in French!

We have been very interested in learning about astronauts and their experiences in space. We've been exploring the Canadian Space Agency website. We watched a few clips on what life is like in space: how do astronauts eat, drink, shower, exercise, sleep, brush their teeth, go to the bathroom, etc.

We've also been talking about the phases of the moon. We learned that the surface of the moon is very dry and dusty. There is no wind or water on the moon. We were fascinated to learn that the footsteps of the astronauts who first walked on the moon are still there because there is no wind or water to disturb the tracks.

One-to-one correspondence

As children mature, their development of mathematical concepts continues. Before they know addition and subtraction, they are forming ideas that will be the foundation of their mathematical learning.

Children are working on strengthening their understanding of one-to-one correspondence (the concept that one number corresponds with one object). They are also working on recognizing numbers, ordering, sequencing and the concept of ten.

Our space inquiry

We asked the students what they would like to transform our dramatic play area into. A few students suggested a spaceship or space station. From there we brainstormed all the things we want to learn about space.

Stay tuned for updates!

Learning about word families

To strengthen our reading and writing skills, we've began to learn about different word families. We started with the at and an families. We discussed how these words rhyme and sound the same. They may have a different beginning sound, and the same ending sound.
